John Thomas Dove was born in Madison County, Ga on June 22, 1849 To John N Dove and Elizabeth Saylors Dove.

John Thomas Dove was eleven when the Civil War began on April 12, 1861 and fifteen when it ended on April 9, 1865. His older brother, Benjamin Franklin Dove died in the Civil War in service to the CSA. Thomas would later name his first son after his fallen brother.

John Thomas married twice. His first wife was Missouri Chambler and they had two children. His second wife was Mary "Molly" Catherine Wallace and they had seven children.

He was a charter member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Madison County, Ga.

Tragedy struck John Thomas Dove when he was 29 years old in May 1892 when two of his youngest sons died. L. C. Dove died May 15th, 1892 when he was just 1 1/2 years old and Doctor P Dove died May 30th, 1892 when he was 7 years old. John Thomas Dove had a total of nine children and sadly only four out lived him.

John Thomas Dove caught pneumonia from a mule and wagon trip that he made in the freezing rain in the Winter of 1919. He was going to his home in Middleton, Ga from Calhoun Falls, SC when the storm hit. When he got home even his beard was frozen, he never left his house again. He died on Jan 18, 1919 at age 69. He was the first Dove to be buried in Elbert County, Ga and was buried at Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
