Ellen (or Elinor) Elizabeth was born on December 4, 1837, in Spartanburg County or Greenville County in South Carolina. She was the first of at least nine children to parents Albert Cunningham and Eliza (Foster) Cunningham.

Albert Cunningham had moved to this part of South Carolina from Virginia with his father William before 1830. When Albert was 20, he was accepted as a member of the Brushy Creek Baptist Church. About a year later, Albert and his father William founded the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Greenville County, along with twelve others. About this time, Albert married his first wife Jane Morgan, who appears to have died in 1836, with the couple having one known child, Martha Jane Cunningham. Albert then married Eliza Foster.

At the time of the 1850 federal census, the Cunningham household consisted of father Albert, mother Eliza, and children Ellen Elizabeth, age 13; James A, age 11; Mary Adeline, age 9; Thursay; Jefferson William, age 4; and Geroge M., age 3. Half-sister Martha Jane is not recorded as living in the household. Ellen's father is listed as working as a blacksmith, with the family living in Spartanburg County.

During the 1850s, Ellen was joined by siblings Abner B.; John Thomas; and Kennedy, with the family living in Spartanburg County. Ellen's father was farming, with a personal estate valued at about $3,500.

Between 1850 and 1856, Ellen married Thomas Andrew Finch. The couple would have children Benjamin Henry, Albert Benton, John James, William Thomas, Landrum F., Dora L., and Robert Edward.

Ellen died in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on August 31, 1822.
