Wife of Jesse Parish1st generation Oregonian, born in 1840.

Abigail Beers was born to Alanson Beers (1808-1853) and Rachel Beardsley (1812-1851), both natives of Connecticut, who made their home in the Oregon Territory, arriving on the ship "Diana" on May 27th, 1837. They had been married Nov 17, 1830 in Fairfield Co., Connecticut. Her father, who became a blacksmith, came with the Methodist Missionary reinforcements. He was a member of the board of the Oregon Institute until his death in 1853, per his Find a Grave memorial (#5986438). He also participated in establishing a Provisional Government and was also involved in forming the 1st Military organization. Alanson Beers also helped lay out the town of Butteville with George Abernathy in the end of 1845. He and Rachel may have arrived with two children, Abigail's older siblings, Sarah Ann, b.Feb 14, 1832 in Fairfield Co., Connecticut, and Eleanor "Ellen", b.1835.

Abigail was born Nov 12, 1840 in Marion County, Oregon Territory. Her younger siblings were William, b.Mar 5, 1842, Oliver, b.Apr 10, 1845, and Jonathan, b.Aug 12, 1848. All of them were born before Oregon achieved statehood, Feb 14, 1859. Abigail's mother died Sep 14, 1851 and was buried at Lee Mission Cemetery, Salem, Marion Co., Oregon. Her father died Feb 20, 1853 and was interred at the same locale next to his beloved wife.
Abigail married Jesse Parrish, a native of Ohio, in Linn Co., Oregon on Mar 11, 1858. Jesse had a farm near Albany, Linn County, where they were living when her first son was born. He was named Frank and was one yr. old when the 1860 Census was taken on Aug 16, 1860. By 1870, the young family was living in Jefferson, Marion Co., Oregon. Jesse was still farming and stated their farm was valued at $12,000. They also had $1,200 in cash assets. Frank was 11 yrs. old and attended school. Also in the home were Rosa L., age 9, Lucretta, age 6, and Edwin E., age 3. Mary E. Powell, 21, from Ohio, and Lewis Powell, 19, from Ohio, were also in the home. There was also a man named George S. W----- (illegible), age 28, who worked as a laborer on the farm and shared their home. Sadly, Jesse Parrish died Sep 25, 1878 and was buried at the Albany Masonic Cemetery, Albany, Linn Co., Oregon. "Abbie" was now a widow with five children, for young Jesse William had been born in 1873. When the 1880 Census was taken at Jefferson, Marion Co., Oregon, Abigail "Abbie" was listed as "keeping house". Oldest son, Frank, age 21, was farming. Daughter Rosa L., listed as "Oreo", age 19, was in the home, as was daughter, Lucy, age 16. Edwin, age 13, attended school. Young Jesse William, age 7, was in the home. William Beers, age 38, and Jonathan Beers, 32, two of her brothers, were living on the farm with her, as farm laborers, along with W. C. Overly, 23, who also was laboring on the farm. In about 1890, Abigail remarried. Her 2nd husband was James T. Curl (b. Nov 1845 in Missouri, per 1900 Census), who was also a farmer. When the 1900 Census was taken, they were living in Jefferson, Marion County, and her brother, William Beers, was living with them, working as a "farm laborer". She also stated that she was the mother of five children, but only four were living. She and James both stated they had been married for ten years. By 1910, they had relocated to the little town of Marion, in Marion Co., Oregon. Only she and James were living in the home and he was still farming, owning their farm free and clear of a mortgage. They stated they had been married for 20 years now, both of them in their 2nd marriage. She also stated again that she was the mother of five children but only four were still living. I did not find a census for 1920, although she didn't pass until Dec 7, 1921. Thanks to Mike Ransom, James T. Curl was located at Franklin Butte Masonic Cemetery in Scio, Linn County, Oregon. He was found dead in his home North of Jefferson, Oregon, on Aug 24, 1924 and his death was ruled due to a heart attack. Mike created a memorial for James Curl and has linked Abigail to him. Abigail Parrish died Dec 7th, 1921 in Jefferson, Marion County, Oregon and was buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Albany, Linn County, Oregon near her first husband, Jesse Parrish, under Abigail Parrish Curl, but her year of birth was erroneously listed on her monument as 1920 instead of 1921. May they Rest in Peace.
I did not find Mr. Curl among persons who came to Oregon via the Oregon Trail. His death certificate states that he had lived in his residence for 30 years (from 1894). I found a James T. Curl living with the Egan family in Columbia Co., Washington in 1880 as a boarder and working as a team driver, although I cannot determine if this is the same gentleman.

Thank you to Mike Ransom for Abigail's correct year of death and for locating her 2nd husband, James T. Curl, and entering him into the Find A Grave system.

Please note that the year of death is wrong on her headstone. She died in 1921, not in 1920. (See news article in her memorial dated 1921!) and her death certificate, provided by Mike Ransom (Thanks again, Mike!). There is no need to submit an edit as her date of death has been verified. Thank you!
