His obituary from the March 9, 1944 News-Gazette:

SEYMOUR, March 9 — (BSC) — Sergeant Dannie [sic] Dale Scales, 23, tail gunner, was killed at 1 a.m., Wednesday, in a plane crash near his station at Gowen field, Boise, Idaho. Report of his death was received late Wednesday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Scales, two miles east of Seymour, from Mrs. Alice Scales, who had been residing with her husband near his base. Details of the accident were not given.

The body will be brought to Seymour and the Blair funeral service of Mahomet will be in charge of funeral services.

Sergeant Scales was the husband of the former Alice Humphrey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Humphrey, Mahomet. He had been home on furlough last Thanksgiving, and at that time his wife and their year-old son, Paul William accompanied him back to Boise. They had been living there since.

Survivors in addition to the widow, son and parents, include a brother, Elbert, Lake Villa, and two sisters, Wanda, 12, at home, and Mrs. Grace Jay, 1519 North Willis street.

The Seymour soldier was a graduate of Mahomet high school with the class of 1939 and had starred there on the basketball squad. He had been attached to a national guard unit in Champaign before the war.

Additional information excerpted from the March 9, 1944 Evening Courier published in Champaign:

He married the former Alice Humphrey of Mahomet two years ago.

A memorial service will be held in Idaho tonight for Sergeant Scales and the body will be brought here by train, arriving late Friday night or Saturday.

Information obtained from news stories which were published March 8 - March 9, 1944 in newspapers nationwide:

Both the Associated Press (AP) and United Press International (UPI) provided news stories of the crash that took his life. They reported that nine airmen were on a combat training flight aboard a four-engined bomber that crashed and burned ten miles southwest of the air base. Six of the men were able to parachute to safety before impact and remained unharmed from the mishap. Their names were not released. The base commander, Col. John R. Kane reported the names of the three deceased as:

Second Lt. William Thomas Maher who was the son of Edward F. Maher of Hackensack, New Jersey

Sgt. Walter E. J. Ford who was the son of Mrs. Frieda Ford of Bergenfield, New Jersey

Sgt. Danny D. Scales who was the husband of Mrs. Alice L. Scales of 1503 Grove street, Boise, Idaho.

Col. Kane was quoted as saying, "the plane burned and was completely demolished."
