She was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Nekoosa, Wis., to John and Annie (Milkia) VanRuth. She grew up in Nekoosa.
She married Edward Esser on Sept. 11, 1931, in Nekoosa. He preceded her in death in 1982.
She owned and operated Esser's Grocery Store on Sylvan Way in Bremerton from 1952 until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry, of Shelton, and Gordy, of Bremerton; two brothers, Don VanRuth, of Bremerton and Arthur VanRuth, of Middleton, Wis.; two sisters, Bertha Behm and Florence Roach, both of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Jerry, of Kent, Scott, of Hilo, Hawaii, Felicia, of Shelton, Cheri Serphin, of Bothell, Rebecca, of Belfair, and Pam and Terie, both of Bremerton; and seven great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Wilford and Chester VanRuth; and by a sister, Margaret Houston.
Visitation is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
