John A. Brittner, 69, of Belfair died Dec. 30, 1999, at his home.

He was born Dec. 30, 1930 in Center, N.D., to Michael and Margaret (Hagel) Brittner. He grew up in Yakima and graduated from Yakima High School. He married Myrna Sommerfeld on Sept. 29, 1956 in Seattle.

He enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served until 1951, earning a Korean War Ribbon with a silver star and three bronze stars, a Presidents Shima-REA Distinguished Medal of Honor, and a ZIF Combat Infantry Badge.

He worked as a rigger at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 33 years, retiring in 1991. Mr. Brittner was a member of the American Legion Post of Port Orchard and the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Belfair.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Marc, of Bremerton and Steven, of Allyn; six sisters, Edna Chubb, of Seattle, Jane Sampier, of Portland, Ore., Norma Martinez, of Port Orchard, Rose Burks, of Selah, Monica Wood, of Selah and Margaret Bitto, of Marysville; and two grandchildren, Skyler and Wesley, of Allyn.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Burial will be at Twin Firs Cemetery in Belfair.
