Seattle Mayor. He served as mayor of Seattle, Washington from March 1892 to March 1894. He spent his early career teaching school in California, before being admitted to the state bar association. In 1882 he moved to Seattle where he gained employment selling books, real estate and working as a part time accountant. Two years later he was appointed as district attorney for King, Snohomish and Kitsap counties. From 1909 to 1949 he served as a King County Superior Court judge, after failing to win elective office to the United States House of Representatives in 1900. At the time of his retirement in 1949, he was the oldest active judge in the United States. In addition to serving as mayor, he also served as a regent at the University of Washington, and as a member of the Seattle School Board. He died from influenza at the age of 95.
