Born in Long Old Fields Maryland, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on 21 Jan. 1833, at the age of 19y 11m 22d, for 3 years. His enlistment records describe him as having blue eyes, brown hair, a ruddy complexion, and as being 5ft 6in tall. After his military service he worked as a messenger for the Quarter Master General's office in Washington DC for about 60 years. In 1892 he applied for and received a pension for his military service.
During his lifetime he married twice. His first wife was Mary Flarity, who he married on November 11, 1833. They had 4 children. His second wife, Judith Carroll, was an immigrant from Ireland. Family lore states that she was a maid for George Phelps and when his 1st wife died he asked her to stay on. Judith said she would stay only if they were married. They married on the 17th of May 1849. They had 10 children.
