Trace accident claims the life of city woman

Two people were killed and two others seriously injured in a head-on accident last Thursday afternoon, July 20, on the Natchez Trace Parkway.

One of the victims was a Houston resident, while the other was a former resident of the city. Killed in the accident were Stella Neal, 62, of Houston and Karen Earnest, 30, of Tupelo who was a former resident of the area. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The wreck took place around 1 pm last Thursday about two miles south of the Pontocola Road intersection on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The wreck was just inside Lee County.

Officials reported Earnest was traveling north on the Parkway in a late model Ford Mustang when the auto she was driving apparently veered into the southbound lane and into the path of the Nissan Maxima in which Mrs. Neal was a passenger. Ms. Earnest was thrown from the car she was driving as a result of the collision's impact.

The Nissan was being driven by Mrs. Neal's granddaughter, Daphne Free of Houston, who had taken her grandparents to Tupelo for a doctor's visit. Also a passenger in the car was her grandfather, James M Neal.

Both Miss Free and Mr. Neal received injuries in the accident. They were taken to North Mississippi Medical Center for hospitalization and treatment for their injuries.
