Meargaet Liles Knight of Decatur, died Wed., June 21, 2008. She was born Feb.15, 1920, in Morgan County to James Garfield Liles and Audrey Stinson Liles. Mrs. Knight attended the former Alabama College for Women in Montevallo and graduated from the University of North Alabama with a bachelor's degree in secondary education. While attending UNA she served as president of the University YWCA, was an officer of the Student Council Executive Board and a member of the Glee Club. Her teaching career included employment in the Decatur City School System, State College in Pennsylvania, Marianna, Fla. and Starkville, Miss. She was also employed by the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. during World War II. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Dr. William Eric Knight.
Dr. and Mrs. Knight moved to Starkville, Miss. in 1952, where they resided until Dr. Knight's retirement from Mississippi State University some 40 years later, She was a member of First Baptist Church of Starkville, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for more than 25 years. She was also a member of a number of organizations on the MSU campus, including serving as an officer of the University Women's Club, as an officer of the Home and Garden Club and developed a cherished lifelong friendship with those in her bridge club. During many of those years she was a supportive mother of her daughter, assisting in school and extracurricular activities, and always remained a proud and devoted wife. The Knights subsequently resided in Dalton, Ga. as well as Decatur and most recently in Huntsville.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Kathryn Knight Miller and husband John and a grandson, John Eric Miller, all of Rocky Face, Ga.; a sister, Mildred Liles Corwin of Bloomington, Ill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
