Dr. John Cannan was the son of Rev. John Cannan who was originally from England and came to Camden in about 1846.
He served in the Civil War as a surgeon attaining the rank of Major. After the war ended, historian Dr. F. E. Weeks says he befriended a young slave and together - having one horse - they walked home to Camden, Ohio. The young man took the name of Williams, Mrs. Cannan's maiden name. He worked on the Cannan farm for some time but later married and moved to Oberlin, Ohio. Rachel was the daughter of John Williams Sr. John Cannan and Rachel had several daughters but only one son, Oswin Cannan. Buried in Camden Cemetery
