LINCOLN - A Middletown father became Logan County's 5th traffic fatality of the year Saturday.
James Agnew, 47, was dead on arrival at 8 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital here. His wife, Fay, 41; the couple's two daughters, Peggy, 9, and Sallie, 6; and Mrs. Betty Berger, 26, of R.R. 1, New Holland were admitted to the hospital.
Agnew was driving west when the eastbound car driven by Mrs. Berger topped the crest of a hill on a narrow gravel road about 15 miles southwest of Lincoln. The cars met headon.
Authorities placed the time of the accident at approximately 6:45 p.m. Mrs. Berger walked about a quarter of a mile to summon aid, they said.
Peggy was in serious condition with possible leg fractures and severe lacerations of the face. She was thrown through the windshield by the impact of the cars, officers said.
Mrs. Agnes was listed in fair condition with facial lacerations, and Sallie was in fair condition after sustaining a bump and lacerations to the head.
Mrs. Berger, traveling alone, received a deep laceration on the chin and also in fair condition.
Agnew had been employed at Caterpillar Tractor at Peoria and was to resume work Monday after a layoff.
He is survived by the widow; the two daughters; two brothers, John and Garland, both of Middletown; and three sisters, Mrs. Raymond Brinkmeyer, and Mrs. Thomas Winterbauer, both of Middletown, and Mrs. Blanche House, of New Albany, Ind.
