The Wellington Leader December 14, 2006

Laura Helen Foote, 88, of Frisco passed away on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Kremmling Memorial Hospital in Kremmling.

Laura was born on the morning of Sept. 12, 1918, a black haired brown eyed girl in the Kelly community, Collingsworth County. Her parents were Winfield S. White Jr. and Ethel Mae (Kesler) White, who owned and operated a cotton farm. Her older sister and two brothers thought she was sweet and called her "Sweetie." The name stuck and everyone called her "Sweetie" - even her doctor, dentist, and teachers. She did not have a formal name until she was three months old. Her father had business to attend to in the county seat of Wellington which consisted of a ten-mile trip. Her mother suggested that while he was there he register the baby's name and the two decided on the name of Laura Helen. This name was not used until she went away to college.

Helen attended the two-room country school near the farm, rode a horse part of the way to high school in Dodson and lived during the week in Wellington to finish high school in 1934. She received her bachelor's degree in Vocation Home Economics from Texas Women's University, Denton, in 1939. She was asked to teach at Dodson High School and did so for one and one-half years. On Feb. 2, 1941, she was married to Robert S. Foote in the little country church near her home, they were the only couple to be married in that church.

After living in Montebello, Calif., for five years, the couple and their three-and-half-year-old daughter Patricia and Robert's mother Mae moved to Frisco and opened the grocery store and four fully furnished log cabins at 510 Main St., which they named Foote's Rest, and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Robert became postmaster in 1947.

During this busy period, three more children were born - Robert H. Bobby, Earnest, and Cynthia. Helen was asked to open a home economics department at the Breckenridge High School, which she did in January 1958. She taught 22 years for the school district retiring in 1980. During her teaching career, she taught not only home economics to both girls and boys but also taught Texas history, seventh, eighth, and ninth grade science, swimming, girl's physical educationa and sponsored several classes, the Future Homemakers of America and Pep Clubs for many years. She taught all four of her children, one granddaughter and two sisters.

Helen has served as a school board member of the Frisco School District No. 9, as town clerk, for Frisco for $5 a month, served on the committee for the organization of Colorado Mountain College, is a lifetime member of the National Education Association, is a charter member of the Frisco Historical Society.

Helen and her husband were both avid fishermen and were among the best fishing guides in the county. She enjoyed reading, cooking and sewing, and with her mother's help traced and wrote a family history.

Robert preceded her in death in September 1973, she was also preceded in death by her parents, a great granddaughter Katherine, and five brothers and sisters.

Helen is survived by her daughter Patricia M. and her husband Neil Masters of Colo., her son Robert H. Foote and wife Rebecca of Calif., her son Earnest S. Foote of Colo., and her daughter Cynthia; and her husband Daniel Eilts of Colo.; her two sisters JoAnna Thomason and Peggy Holland both of Texas; a sister-in-law Sonia White of Wellington; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
