Mr. Funk was one of the pioneers of Piatt County, coming here with his parents, Abraham and Eliza J. McKinney Funk in 1853. He was married to Sarah A. Chilson in 1857. He is survived by his wife and four children: J.E. and S.E. of Cerro Gordo, A.L. of Normal and Cora A. Funk of Cerro Gordo. He also leaves a brother, T.A. Funk of Decatur and a sister, Mrs. Amelia Edie of this city.
Mr. Funk was a veteran of the Civil War having joined Company K 107th Illinois Infantry in the year 1862. He was engaged in a number of important battles, among them being Knoxville, the Atlanta campaign and the capture of Wilmington and Raleigh. He was never injured in any way and was mustered out of the service at Salisbury, North Carolina in 1865.
For a number of years Mr. Funk was engaged in farming and later in life moved to Cerro Gordo where he conducted a first-class hardware store. He was elected treasurer of Piatt County in the fall of 1898 and served in that capacity for four years. While in this office he made many firm and loyal friends. After his return to Cerro Gordo he was elected president of the State Bank of Cerro Gordo which position he held until the time of his death. He was a member of the M.E. Church at Cerro Gordo and G.A.R. Post 210.
