The information on James' grave would indicate he was born in 1823. The census records of 1840-1880 show this to be incorrect. James born the son of Burrell Cochran and Courtney Cowart in Green County, MS (which location is now in George County) "on the Pascagoula" river. In 1840 his father is listed as having 640 acres and 4 cattle. 1860, Amaziah purchased 80 acres in George Co. 1862, Amaziah enlisted as a private in Gaines Warriors, Co. A, 24th MS Infantry. At the battle of Murfreesboro he was wounded in the left foot "as the morning star was rising." 1865, Amaziah surrendered with his unit at Cirtonelle, AL. Records indicate he was 5 ft 10 inches tall, with dark hair and dark eyes. Jan 30, 1868, Amaziah married Nancy O'Neal in Harrison County. 1878, Nancy died. May 30, 1880, Amaziah married Nellie Adeline Bond in Perry County. 1880-1891 Amaziah bought 420 acres on Black Creek. 1892, Amaziah listed as parent of Educable Children in Perry County. 1900, Amaziah is living close to his daughter Serena and her husband Gilbert Bond. 1920, Amaziah's home is listed as in the Beat of Deep Creek Consolidated in Perry County. He gives his age as 92.
