Joseph was the son of Martin and Sarah "Blair" McElwreath. He never married. The story goes that he came to Trickham and traded a "broken back mule" for 160 acres and sent to Georgia for his parents. Joe was an epileptic, suffering seizures which became worse as he lived into middle age. Preparing this home for his father's family was a much greater effort for him than if he has been a robust man. With a walking-plow and his one mule, Joe had turned enough sod to use for a vegetable garden. Now a little field was plowed, ready to be planted to corn. They bought a milk cow and pigs, and though they had little money to spend, they lived about as well as all their neighbors did.
