William "Bill" Jones (also went by William Gibson/Gipson) was born in about 1809 in Knox County, Kentucky. William was born 50 yards from the present courthouse in Harlan County, Kentucky.
His mother was Sally Jones and his father is believed to have been a Mr. Gibson. He was often called "Tricks" because he loved to fool people. In fact, in one Census year his family was listed as Jones on one page and as Gibson on another.

William Gibson "Tricks" Jones married Mary "Polly" Bryant.
