Abram Smith Bowman was born on the estate Bellevue, near Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky, the son of Dudley Mitchum Bowman and Virginia Smith.

He was elected president of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce in 1902.
He lead a group of Lexingtonians in spearheading the purchase 5000 acres of furtile Wheat land in Alberta, Canada just east of the Rocky Mountains in September of 1906. The farm land produced very large profits in 1908.
However in 1911, the wheat farms suffered a devastating hail storm which destroyed millions of bushels of wheat.
In 1910, A. Smith Bowman resided in Los Angeles County where he had large real estate holdings. In 1920 he was President of an Auto Sales company in Marion, Indiana.
In 1935, A. Smith Bowman with his sons A. Smith Bowman JR and Edmund DeLong Bowman founded what is now the oldest family-owned bourbon distillery in the United States. The distillery, known for its Kentucky style bourbon called "Virginia Gentleman" was originally located on the the Bowman's Sunset Hills Farm, Fairfax County, Virginia, which is known today as Reston, VA.
Upon his death in 1952, his remains, per his request, were returned to Lexington for burial in Lexington cemetery as were his wife's Katherine Lylleton (DeLong) Bowman.
His son's continued to run the thriving business and were well respected for their philanthropic efforts in the area offering acreage for the building of George Mason University.
In 1988, the A. Smith Bowman distillery was moved to historic Fredericksburg, VA. Today, in addition to being the home of the distillery, there is a Bowman Center which is an industrial park and business center, contributing greatly to one of our country's most historic regions.
