Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Childress Cemetery in Childress. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Childress with the Rev. Duke Underwood and the Rev. Kerry Wood officiating.
Billy Joe was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Childress to Carroll Lawrence and Francis Evaline Atkinson. He served in the Navy during World War II; afterward, he was employed with Burlington Northern Railroad in Childress and in Denver.
After retirement from Burlington Northern, Billy Joe was property manager of the Plaza De Monaco Condominiums in Denver as well as a car salesman. In 2006, he retired from work at the age of 80. Throughout his life, he exemplified his work ethic and will be remembered for his dedication to work. Amarillo had been his home for the past year.
Survivors include two sons, Joe B. Atkinson and wife Jane of Destin, Fla., and Bill D. Atkinson and wife Joyce of Lubbock; two sisters, Verlene Turner of Childress and Peggy Cook of Amarillo; a brother, Gary Atkinson of Childress; a granddaughter, Melissa Bloodworth and husband Joe of Arlington; and a grandson, Jason Atkinson of Miami, Fla.
The family suggests memorials be to Childress Cemetery, 301 Fourth St. S.E., Childress, TX 79201.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Childress.
