Delward Lee Britt was my husband's cousin. Although I never had the chance to know him, my husband has many fond memories of Delward, and my mother in law and aunts tell loving stories of him.

Delward died as a result of a car accident one afternoon as he returned to the Air Force Base after working his part time side job at a pharmacy in Sumter. He was driving his "pride and joy" - a '65 Chevy Impala SS when he apparently came upon an Air Force flatbed truck broken down in the right lane on a blind curve in the highway. No flares were put out as a warning. As it were, Delward had two options: swerve to avoid the flatbed and head directly into a field where children were playing or hit the flatbed head on. Del took on the Air Force flatbed and died instantly as a result.

The following obituary was copied from the Charleston Post and Courier:

Airman 1st Class Delward Lee Britt of Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, died Tuesday September 17, 1968 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow at the First Church of the Nazarene, North Charleston. Burial, directed by Stuhr's, will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Britt was born May 16, 1947 in Charleston to Woodrow Murphy Britt and Lois Donnally Britt. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are his parents of Charleston, three brothers, Randall A. Britt, David A. Britt and Charles M. Britt all of Charleston; his paternal grandmother Mrs. Lela Britt of Moncks Corner; and his maternal grandfather and step-grandmother, Greenleaf Whittier and Virginia Donnally of Charleston.
