Born on June 2, 1911, in Santiago de Chile, to Eduardo Vicuña Echaurren and Margarita Aránguiz Cerda, Archbishop Eladio Vicuña Aránguiz was ordained to the priesthood inside the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, on September 22, 1934, by Msgr. José Horacio Campillo. In Santiago, Don Eladio served as vicar cooperator of the parish of Santo Tomás de Aquino, parish priest of Santa Teresita between 1935 and 1948, and founder and later parish priest of the parish of the Buen Pastor.

Domestic Prelate of His Holiness, aged 44, Pope Pius XII appointed him as Bishop of the Diocese of Chillán on August 28, 1955, following the demise of Msgr. Jorge Larraín Cotapos, receiving his episcopal consecration, inside the named parish of the Buen Pastor, on the following October 18, from Bishop Ramón Munita Eyzaguirre of Puerto Montt, assisted by Bishops Manuel Larraín Errazuriz of the Diocese of Talca and by Msgr. Alejandro Menchaca Lira of Temuco.

During his episcopate, Bishop Vicuña inaugurated the Cathedral of Chillán and the Casa de Ejercicios Tabor, and officiated the first episcopal consecration in the named cathedral, that of Msgr. Juan Luis Ysern, following his appointment as apostolic administrator of Calama.

Pope Paul VI named Msgr. Eladio Vicuña as Archbishop of Puerto Montt on July 16, 1974, succeeding Msgr. Alberto Rencoret. He received the pallium on December 12 of that year.

President of the Comisión Episcopal de Liturgia, Archbishop Vicuña retired from the pastoral government of his see aged 75, on May 13, 1987, and Msgr. Bernardo Cazzaro, was named as his successor.

In 2005, the Archbishop celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his episcopal consecration at his beloved parish church of the Buen Pastor. He died at the venerable age of 97, on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at 23 pm., of pneumonia.

His remains were laid out in state in the Buen Pastor parish, whilst funeral Mass, presided by Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz, was said on Tuesday, July 1, at 10.30 am., followed by interment at the mausoleum of the Cathedral of Chillán.
