Seattle Mayor. He served four terms as mayor of Seattle, Washington from June 1942 to June 1952. A graduate of the University of Washington School of Law, he was a member of the American, Washington State and Seattle-King County Bar Associations. A veteran of the First World War, he was among the first American troops to land in Italy. He served as chairman of the Seattle-Kobe Sister City Committee following the Second World War and was a key figure in establishing post-war relations with Japan. In addition to serving as mayor he also served as a justice of the peace and a police court judge.
