Samuel Gonotsky was born in Poland (month and day unknown); he died in Hurley Hospital, Flint, Michigan on April 5, 1929, from Pleural Tuberculosis. He was a leading American checkers player in "The Two-Move Era." He is considered to be possibly the best "crossboard player" and the best US player of the 1920s

(Below is an email I received from Mr. Gonotsky's nephew.)

"My name is Mark Samuel Gardner, nephew of Sam Gonotsky. Thank you for posting him on Find a Grave. My father Irving (Gonotsky) Gardner was Sam's younger brother. One of four younger brothers, and spoke to me often of his beloved brother. My dad said he was the world's best at the time. I was given Samuel, in his honor. The father of the 5 boys died in 1920 in NYC. Sam died in '29 at age 27. In Cooperstown baseball Hall of Fam, is a checker set belonging to the great Christy Mathewson, of the New York Giants. Mathewson was a checker enthusiast, quite good. Sam was his close friend and often played checkers with him. I learned this years ago, visited Cooperstown not long ago. The set is on dislplay!

Repectfully,
