Founder of Phi Delta Theta. In 1848, Robert Morrison, a senior at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, proposed the idea of a new collegiate brotherhood to his friend and classmate, John McMillan Wilson. Four underclassmen were invited to join them and the fraternity was born. Morrison designed the shield form of the badge and co-authored The Bond of Phi Delta Theta. The Bond remains unchanged today and Morrison‘s name is still a vital part of the rituals that take place in every Phi Delta Theta chapter room. When he died at the age of eighty in 1902, sixty-eight chapters of his fraternity had been formed at leading colleges across the country. Today, there are 160 chapters throughout the United States and Canada.
