Joseph Allen, a miner, 25 years old, was killed at the Eureka mine in Miami, at 4 o’clock Thursday afternoon; he fell from a tub while being hoisted from the ground. The accident happened at quitting time. He was being hoisted from the ground with the superintendent and in some way the hoist jerked the tub, causing Allen to lose his hold and he fell back to the bottom of the shaft.

The body was taken to the Fribley undertaking parlors in Miami and was brought to Galena for burial today. Mr. Allen was widely known in Galena Heights. He was born and raised in that part of the city. He is survived by a wife, a mother, two sisters and two brothers.

Biographical Notes:
Joe’s parents were Martin and Malissa Allen. It is possible that his middle name was for his father, Martin. The sisters and brothers noted above were, at the time, Lee V Allen, John Francis Allen, Grace Emma Harlan, and Pearl Mattie Halterman.

It is thought that his wife may have been Ida S Barnett. There is a record of a marriage between Joseph M Allen and Ida S Barnett, both of Miami, Oklahoma, being married on Christmas Eve, 1912, by Jeremiah Hubbard, a minister of the Friends Church. His birth is given about 1887, and hers as age 16, with her father, Edward Barnett, providing consent. Her parents were Edward and Mary Maggie Barnett and both were witnesses to the marriage. Ida was of the Cherokee Nation.
