Enoch Rice Fillinger, a native of Crawley Creek, West Virginia, was the son of George F. Bittle Fillinger, 1857 -1918, and Mary Jane Dalton Fillinger, 1868 -1948. His siblings included James L. Fillinger, (1886 - 1950), William Edward Fillinger, (4-22-1888 - ), Ethel Dempsey, (1889 - 1916), Cora E. Fillinger, (1891 - ), Shofer Hulett Fillinger (1895 - 1964), Vinson C. Fillinger (1898 - ), Mollie O. Stollings (1901 - 1978), and Bettie M. Fillinger (1907 - ). He was the husband of Lora Lee Hager Fillinger (b 1-16-1902, d 1-17-1995). He was an extremely hard working man who owned Becky's drive-in (named after his baby daughter, Rebecca Fillinger Moody) in Chapmanville, West Virginia, coal mined, grew crops, raised a family through the Great Depression and World War II, and also served as the local undertaker and funeral director. He was an enterprising, driven man who diligently sought ways to make money and provide for his family. Enoch Fillinger was no stranger to hard work. I saw the site of his homestead in Logan County, West Virginia, as well as the mountain which he had to scale and descend to meet and exit the company's coal truck, going to and from work. I marveled at how this man would have found his lantern near the coal truck's stop point, after being exhausted from working his shift digging coal underground, only to descend a mountain in blackness to get home, wash, eat, read a paper, prepare for the next days' work, etc. Enoch Fillinger rose in a time when men where truly men. Upon developing black lung, he retired, bought the Ponderosa Trailer Park circa 1953 and moved his Family to Korona, Florida. After developing the Ponderosa, he obtained a liquor license, opened a bar on US 1 South, and grew a small citrus orchard on the trailer park property. His business interests and accomplishments, vast and diverse in nature, would not have been possible without the stalwart, continuous backing of his lifelong wife, Lora. His children included Nancy Fillinger Thomas (b 5-5-1921, d 12-2-1994), Ruby S. Fillinger Webb (b 12-24-1923, d 9-4-1997), Ethel Fillinger Durrance (School Nurse, Flagler-Palm Coast HS, b 1-27-1928, d 1-18-1983), Homer Fillinger (b 1-11-1930, a US Army paratrooper and Cold War/ Korean War Veteran, d 2-5-2008), Nadine Fillinger Nipper (b 5-27-1933, d 4-27-2006), Cora Fillinger Adams (b 9-22-1936), Bessie Fillinger Thompson (b 12-11-1939), Betsy Fillinger Spivey (b 12-11-1939), and Rebecca Fillinger Moody (Deputy Sheriff/ Dispatcher, Flagler County Sheriff's Office, b 10-25-1946, d 7-12-1994). He was Grandfather to 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He hated snakes and if he found one on his property, he would entertain himself by pinning its head with a shovel or his boot & tormenting it until getting bored and finally killing it.

LIFE: 77 Years, 10 Months, 10 Days

CAUSE OF DEATH: Diabetes, Emphazema/ Black Lung

The Coal Miner's Prayer

Each dawn as we rise, lord we know all to well,
We face only one thing - a pit filled with hell.
To scratch out a living the best that we can,
But deep in the heart, lies the soul of a man.

With black covered faces, and hard calloused hands,
We work the dark tunnels unable to stand.
To labor and toil as we harvest the coals,
We silently pray "lord please harvest our souls".
~~W. Calvet
