James Maury was born in Dublin**.

Son of: Mary Anne Fontaine, Daughter of Rev. James Fontaine and Anne Elizabeth Boursiquot and: Matthew Maury, a French Huguenot.

James Maury attended William and Mary College.

In 1742, he traveled to England where he was ordained a minister.

He opposed the "Two Penny Act" of 1757, bringing a suit against the collectors of the parish for the full amount of his salary in tobacco. This suit, known in American history as "The Parson's Clause" was an important legal and political dispute in the Colony of Virginia which scholars believe was the important event leading up to the American Revolution involving the question of taxation.

James Maury was the husband of Mary Walker, daughter of Captain James Walker. James and Mary married on November 11 1743 in Louisa County, Virginia. They had thirteen children.

As founder of the Maury School for Boys, he tutored three future Presidents and five future signers of the Declaration of Independence: They were: Thomas
Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe.

Thomas Jefferson, who was enrolled in Rev. Maury's Classical School for Boys, lived with the Maury Family for two years while he was being educated.

July 12,1749, James Maury founded the Loyal Land Company. His partners were Colonel Joshua Fry, Peter Jefferson & Thomas Walker. They held the patent to 800,000 acres of unsettled land in Western Virginia.

James was minister of the Fredericksville Parish of Albemarle from 1751 until his death in 1769.

James Maury served as the Chaplain to the Albemarle Troops participating in the French and Indian War of 1755.
