Served honorably as a Private with "C" Company, 115th Engineers, 40th Infantry Division (Nicknamed "Sunshine Division"), US Army, American Expeditionary Force, in France during World War I. He married Matilda Weidlich and together they had 9 children ( 4 sons and 5 daughters) and one adopted son (who died at age 14). His four sons also served in the U.S. Army (one in WW2, and two in Korea), and the majority of his daughters married military men (most of whom served in Korea).
