My very much loved grandmother who was the ultimate flapper.Wife of Herman Oscar Riede. Daughter of Gustav and Sophia Beck Lehmann. Sister to Julius Frederick Lehmann (1/17/1896), Conrad Thomas (Coonie)Lehmann (11/1/1897, Wilhelmina L. Lehmann Reilly(Myrna)(7/13/1899) and Mary Henrritta Lehmann (Mable)Lawson (10/28/1901). Mother of Ruth Louise Riede Mantei Mahr born 11/19/1919. She was my "instant" grandmother - if it was new and modern she embraced it. My mother, Ruth, use to say if it wasn't for Swanson TV dinners my grandfather would have starved to death. Always have memories of going to her apartment in Middle Village, New York and spending a week in the summer. She would fix Taylor ham sandwiches with cole slaw and I would sit in the living room with a board over the arms of a chair and watch TV while I ate (not allowed at home) She would give me a dime to run errands and then I could buy comic books. Always dressed nice and smelled good. While my memories are good my mother's were not so good. Betty like to go out and my mother was raised more by her grandmother then her mother. She gave me a beautiful cameo and I asked her if it was a family heirloom - she said no she found it in a bar one night when she was sweeping up! She once told me she ran away from her mother by running across the tops of buildings. A man came to pick her up for a date and she decided not to go! She was married in New Jersey?? found marriage license in Brooklyn # 15694 dated 11/28/1917 - however, the story goes she brought my grandfather home after a weekend in NJ and told her mother they got married. Sophia had them sit down for coffee and called the minister to marry them in front of her!Best advise she gave me - The new birth control pill was wonderful and if you held it between your knees you would never get pregnant! Miss You!!

A DNA TEST shows me, Judi Mantei Braddick as 32% Irish. It is possible my mother Ruth Riede was not Herman Riede's biological daughter. He returned home on March 7, 1919 from WWI (France). My mother was born November 19, 1919. Her father may be William Arthur Eaton.
