Enlisted, 1891, in Troop A, NYNG, in New York City. He saw field service with Troop A during the Buffalo Switchmen's Strike, August 1892 and during the Brooklyn Trolley Strike, January 1895. When Troop A reorganized into Squadron A, he was assigned to Troop 1. As a member of Troop, A paraded as escort to President Harrison for the laying of the cornerstone for the Grant monument, April 27, 1892. He was discharged from Squadron A, in 1896.

Commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, April 21, 1898, assigned to Company D, 12th Regiment, NYNG. He mustered in for Spanish American War service, May 13, 1898, at Peekskill, NY. The 12th Regiment was designated the 12th NY Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted, May 13, 1898, 1st Lieutenant, serving as Battalion Adjutant and promoted Captain July 23, 1898. He was discharged from the 12th Regiment January 10, 1899.

His son John Herbert Claiborne Jr., also served in Squadron A / 101st Cavalry 1929 - 1932

Practitioner of and Instructor in Ophthalmology (Specialist in Eye Diseases). Son of Dr. John Herbert and Sara Joseph (Alston) Claiborne, of Petersburg. Virginia. His father is a distinguished scholar and physician. ( on the paternal side, he is eighth in descent from Colonel William Claiborne, who was Secretary and Treasurer of the Colony of Jamestown, Virginia, and is directly descended from Alan de Cliburne (anno 1196), of Cliburnc Hervey, Westmoreland Comity, England. ( on his mother's side, he is descended from John Alston, of Halifax County, North Carolina, who was Associate Justice in that Colony in 1724, and was one of the "Alstons of Odell."
