Isaac is the son of Edmund and Sarah McClain Hodges. He arrived in the Republic of Texas on December 10, 1839. He enlisted in the Mexican War on May 3, 1847 while living in Houston County, Texas.

He married Alcinda Bryan on November 25, 1847.

During the Civil War he served in CSA CO A Terry's Regiment Texas Calvary.

By 1870 Isaac and Alcinda had settled in Leon County, Texas. They are the parents of nine children.

The cemetery at Clear Creek was started when Isaac collapsed after a hard days work on the Clear Creek Baptist Church.
