ROBERT LEE RUSSELL, JR., served in the Court of Appeals of Georgia, 1961-1965. He was born in DeKalb County, Georgia, on February 21, 1925, and died June 14, 1965.
He attended public schools in Winder, Barrow County, Georgia; was graduated from Darlington Prep School in Rome; attended Emory University and received his law degree from the University of Georgia in 1949; was law clerk for Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Curtis L. Waller for two years; practiced law with his brother Richard Russell III and later became a partner in the firm of Russell, Vandiver & Russell until appointed to the Court of Appeals.

He served as a member of the Georgia General Assembly in the House for eight years from 1951-1958 from Barrow County. He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps at 17; was a machine gunner with the 29th Regiment, 6th Marine Division on Okinawa; was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle.
He has said, "One of the most important duties of an Appellate Judge is to carefully peruse the record and become thoroughly familiar with the facts of each case." Others have said that he possessed "complete dedication to the law and the discovery of truth through its orderly processes, his natural brilliance plus indefatigable industry, but most of all his passion for justice. His superb ability and analytical acumen marked him for greatness and with experience his stature as a judge steadily grew." Many believed that had he lived he would have soon been elevated to the Supreme Court of the United States. As for competency, character, and courage, he fought for his country, his clients in court, and for his state.
