William Bach was a veteran of the Civil War. On August 25, 1862, he enlisted with Co. H 68th Regiment of Pa. Volunteers. He participated in the battle at Fredericksbug, where he was wounded and then at Gettysburg, where he was again wounded. He was discharged May 4, 1864.

He was apponted postmaster of Pottstown three different times. Initially under President Benjamin Harrison, then William McKinley, and later by Theodore Roosevelt.

He is buried in Pottstown East.
