Sgt. James M. Treber of Imperial Beach, California graduated from Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach, where he participated in the ROTC program. After a stint in the merchant marines, he joined the Army in November 2005 and signed up for Special Forces training. In 2007 he earned the coveted "Green Beret" and was assigned to 1st Bn., 7th SFG(A) at Fort Bragg, N.C., in Sept. 2006 as a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha weapons sergeant. James and his wife had planned to move to Astoria, Oregon once he retired from active duty to be near family. He was serving his first deployment to Afghanistan since joining the Army in 2005. His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the Special Forces Tab. He died in Khosrow-E Sofla, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained when his vehicle rolled into a canal. He and two other soldiers drowned in the accident. One of his last acts was to free another soldier from his seat belt and give him his air pocket. James went below the water, looking for another way out. He knew there was not enough room for them both of to breathe and was struggling to open the hatches. He was 24. In July 2009, the Army presented his family with a Soldier's Medal, an award for heroism performed while not in combat. The ceremony took place in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
