Wm D Powell was born in Tennessee February 22, 1838. While yet a boy, he came to Missouri and in the year of 1858 he bought 110 acres of land from William Robins and built a large one room log house and cleared some of the land. On August 19 of this same year, he was married to Hester Jane Starkey and they lived in this one room house for nine years, where six of their nine children were born. He then built a five room log house, four rooms on the first floor and one large room upstairs. This house was weather boarded on the outside with a rock chimney, built in the year 1869. This house was built of pine logs that were hauled from a forty acre tract of land adjoining the Huffer place that his wife Hester had taken up when she came to Missouri from Tennessee with her brother and his wife Mr and Mrs Jack Starkey. This was before she married Wm D Powell. Although she was born in Tennessee May 15, 1835, she never met Wm D until she came to Missouri. Wm D was working for Wm Tinnin whent they were married. Wm D owned a yoke of oxen and made $5 a day hauling pine timber from his wife's land while they owned it. They sold it to Sam Caldwell and he sold it to Jo Pavlic who built a home on it and improved it.
Wm D and Hester Powell reared eight children (one died an infant)on this farm of 110 acres and gave them all a very good education. This farm is 4 miles east of Marquand and 6 miles west of Patton, Missouri.
This account written by Lucy E Myers on September 21, 1938. It was found in a Bible with a Memorial Card for William D Powell died April 17, 1911 aged 73 years.
