The two men that would enter the store on a ruse would be Ted Rogers and an associate of Ralph Fults known anly as "Johnny." Mr Bucher answered a knock on his door, late one night, and the two men asked to buy some guitar strings. They offered a $10 bill, knowing that Bucher would have to open the safe for change. Unknown to them though Mr Bucher also kept a pistol in the safe. When he reached for it he was shot through the heart and died instantly.
