George is the son of James A. Provence and Susan. He was born in Titus County, Texas in 1860 and he had one older brother named John M. Provence (Find A Grave memorial number 27886001) who was born in 1853 in Alabama. George's grandparents were Thomas Provence and Mary (Stokes) Provence. The township of Provence, Oklahoma was named after George Provence as was the school that used to exist in Provence, Oklahoma.

This cemetery that he is buried in is also named after him. The town came into existence in the late 1880's and officially became a township in 1895 when a U.S. Post Office opened there. This Post Office was opened in a store that was owned by George Provence and thus that is how it got it's name. George's first wife was Malinda Catharine McElyea and they were married in Texas on 28 August 1879. They emigrated to Chickasaw Nation Indian Territory in 1882, and were residing in Addington Bend (Thackerville) of Love County. Catherine and George had at least one child together a girl named Mary Elizabeth "Pearl" Province. Even though Catherine's obituary said she left two small children behind we believe as does Catherine's McElyea family that Mary Elizabeth "Pearl" Province was the only child that George and Catherine had together before Catherine died on December 28, 1883 in this location. I have been able to trace this child Mary Elizabeth "Pearl" Province back to Texas where she was raised by her mother's McElyea family after George Province died. This daughter eventually married a man named Curtis Joe Tyra and the then had a daughter named Billye Ruth Tyra born Jan 28, 1910 in Texas.

George married his second wife named Amanda (Mitchell) Provence
in 1884 who died in Ardmore, Oklahoma. The funeral home records in Ardmore say she was also buried in the Provence Cemetery. Although there is no marker for her it is believed she is buried next to her husband. The Provence Township existed until about 1932 when the dpression started and the town just went away. The old township was about 7 miles east of Ardmore Oklahoma and can be found listed on old Olklahoma State maps up until 1935. Local genealogists say that cemetery records show that George was probably the 3rd person buried in the cemetery that was named after him. George Eventually rmarried a lady named Amanda Mitchell in 1884.

It is believed that Amanda and George had one child before they died, a daughter named Birdie May Provence who was raised by her cousins after George and Amanda died. Birdie was born April 14, 1888 in Wilson Oklahoma. Birdie was married at least twice the first time to a Lewis Hardin Skelton who she had 3 kids with and the second time to a man whose last name was Sanderson. Bertie died Nov 8, 1979 in Compton California and she is buried in the Angeles Abbey Memorial Park in Compton California.
