Longtime Corbett resident Ernest Hager, 89, died Monday, April 16, in Hillsboro.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Southeast Smith Road and Evans Road, Corbett.

Ernest was born May 18, 1917, in Carbon, Alberta, Canada, to Jack and Katherine (Teske) Hager. As a child, he moved with his family to the Dakotas. In 1929, they moved to Portland, where he graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School in 1935. He continued his education at Portland Art School and graduated with a four-year degree.

Shortly after his marriage, he enlisted in the Army and served in San Francisco during World War II. He worked as an advertising artist until the mid-1940s, when he was honorably discharged.

After his discharge, Ernest returned to Portland, where he worked as a freelance cartoonist in the commercial advertising industry. He then purchased a piece of property in Corbett and built what is now known as Brickhaven Bed & Breakfast.

On Dec. 9, 1978, Ernest married Ruth Drugg Besaw in Portland.

He retired in the late 1990s.

Ernest was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Northeast Multnomah County Community Association. He enjoyed creating abstract art, spending time in Corbett, playing the harmonica and attending ballets or operas.

Survivors include his wife of Hillsboro; daughter, Jan Pipher of Corbett; sons, Robin Hager of Occidental, Calif., Michael Hager of San Francisco and Timothy Hager of Corbett; stepdaughters, Chris Noski and Marilyn Hagen, both of Portland; sisters, Vi Ward of Salem and Alma Prather of Southern California; stepbrother, Don Linenberger of Albany; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
