Velma, my maternal grandmother, was born in Lone Elm, Kansas, where she grew up and married my grandfather, George M. Lucas. Sadly, on Velma and George's 12th wedding anniversary, George, while on a business trip to Mobile, AL, July 4, 1925, dove into three feet of water at a public swimming pool, and broke his neck. He died the next day in Hospital.

Velma and George had three children, Bonita Vivian (my mother), George Dale, and Velma Elizabeth. The family, after Geroge's death, moved to Hutchiinson, KS, where they lived with Velma's brother, Bennie Lavern, and thier mother, Harriet (Hattie) May (Bidwell) Parrish. Velma never remarried.
