On the same Tombstone:

Just Samplin'and "A Bunch of Bananas"
When James would come to town on the bus (his home in Salkum, Washington to Centralia, Washington) and stay with Henry Roberts and family he would walk Pearl Jewell Roberts, his granddaughter (then a little girl), to the grocery store on North Tower Street in Centralia which was located on the left hand side of this one way street, called Kersey Grocery Store (It was across the street from the then Safeway Store). They had bushel baskets of fresh produce and food outside and he would take her inside where they had chocolates on the counter and he would give her either a strawberry or vanilla filled chocolate and take one for himself and then say, “just samplin” but the reason she remembers it so well is because she thought he was being naughty. I thought this was a great story for a little girl to remember about her grandpa. Sometimes she remembers Grandpa Powell coming home with a bunch of bananas on his back. This is the entire stalk that is cut off the tree of bananas. Imagine that!

It was popular in the day, that Henry Ephraim Roberts had his picture taken, to have your teeth filed so he had it done. Later he had them all crowned and much later went to false teeth. I added this because my son was asking about his teeth all being pointed. Then it reminded us of this next story.

Another fun story. When Pearl Jewell Roberts (his daughter) was a young girl her Grandpa James Winright Powell would ride the bus to town. It would come and go daily from Morton to Centralia and the bus driver was a cousin named Sitton (I wonder if he got free rides?). He would spend the night with them and one time he placed his false teeth in a cup in the window sill. He didn't know that the cup belonged to Henry (his son-in-law). In the middle of the night Henry got up thirsty, put more water in the glass and was drinking and it had food in his water and then he knew why when he ran into TEETH. This made him physically nauseated. Can you imagine? Pearl never forgot the event. She still laughs over it. Funny huh?
