Pfc Frank J. Phelan served in Company B of the 1st Ranger Battalion. He landed with his unit on the beaches near Gela in the early morning of 10 July 1943,
D-Day of Operation Husky (the invasion of Sicily). PFC Phelan was killed in action around Gela later that same day. First buried in a small cemetery nearby, his remains were exhumed and reburied in the temporary American cemetery GELA, on 17 July 1943 in grave C-25-300.
After the war his remains were repatriated and buried here.
