Ohio-born Larry Deger was an early-day saloon-owner, first city marshall, and mayor of Dodge City, Kansas, where on July 18, 1883, he married Etta R. Engleman. As early as September 1892, he owned and operated Deger Lumber Company in (new) Velasco, Texas, near the mouth of the Brazos River, where on 24 May 1898, he became postmaster and so served until 1914. He, with his wife, Etta, and his daughter, Bessie A. Deger (later Harrison) moved to Houston where they were living at the time of his death.
