Mr. Watkins died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at Veterans Home and Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Mr. Watkins was born Oct. 27, 1917, in LaVerne, Okla., the son of J. Harve and Harriett Barker Watkins. He moved to Salina and then to Vinland, where he attended Vinland Grade School and then Vinland High School for two years. He moved to Everton, Mo., in November 2003 and entered a care center March 13, 2008, in Republic, Mo. He was transferred to Veterans Home and Hospital in Mount Vernon on June 6, 2008.
Mr. Watkins served in the U.S. Navy. He joined at age 17 and served aboard ship for 10 years before and after World War II. He spent the rest of his career with U.S. Strategic Command and served in Korea and Vietnam. He then served at Fort Huachucha, Ariz., and retired in 1964.
He married Fay Harrington in September 1952 in San Francisco. She died April 30, 1995.
Survivors include two sisters, Charlene Watkins Jones, Baldwin City, and Evelyn Watkins Whetten, Springfield, Mo.
