Just after the close of the Civil war in 1865, Richard Smith brought his family to America and lived for eighteen months in the state of Maryland. Soon he heard of the greater opportunities of the newly arrived immigrant in the far west, and he therefore took his family to Logan, Utah, where he remained until he was fifty years of age. He then came to Idaho, making his home with his son George who lived in Rexburg. He remained there until his death in 1904.

According to a court document Richard and Helen were married on April 25, 1846. They had two illegitimate children before they were married. Another court document shows Helen took Richard to court to get child support.
