LANCASTER - Friends and family are mourning the death of an 18-year-old Quartz Hill resident who was killed late Wednesday evening when his 1998 Saturn sedan collided with a motor home.

Shane Byrd, who had left his grandmother's house in Quartz Hill to drive to the store, was traveling east about 9 p.m. on Columbia Way (Avenue M), approaching the intersection of 40th Street West, when he lost control of the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle veered into the westbound lane and crashed broadside into a 2006 RVISN motor home driven by Brian Glidden, 44, of Lancaster. Glidden suffered minor injuries, CHP officials said.

"Apparently he cut one of the corners too wide and hit softer ground. Then he started spinning and went over into the other lane, where the motor home hit him and flipped the car over," said Byrd's best friend, Braden Roseborough.

"No parties were at fault. It was a complete accident."

Byrd, a 2007 graduate of Desert Christian High School who was enrolled at Antelope Valley College, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The doctors didn't even know the cause of death just by looking at him. It was completely internal, but apparently it was instant," Roseborough said.

Besides having a great eagerness and passion for the Christian faith, Byrd was also known for his love of music, his friends said.

"He was extremely musically gifted," said Chris Johnson, Grace Chapel senior pastor and the Byrd family's pastor.

"He was an amazing musician who played the guitar - both acoustic and electric - and also sang. But he was very humble. He didn't like to show off," Roseborough said.

Byrd, who has younger twin sisters, forever will be remembered for his honest, loyal, fun-loving and friendly personality, friends said.

"He had a smile that lit up the room," said Karen Long, a church youth leader and Byrd's high school choir teacher.

"The moment that I remember was when Shane and I sat talking and playing guitar one night at a youth group camping trip. He was full of passion, telling me how he wanted to be good and how he wanted to see God. How he wanted to truly, truly know God."

Byrd had been visiting with friends and family right before he got into the car.

"The first thing I thought when I heard about it was, wow. … I mean, he was such a vibrant, young individual who infused everyone around him," said Desert Christian High School Principal Devin Thomas.

"When you saw him, there was so much life, and when we lose someone we tend to reflect and we ache. And we ache for him and the memories."

BYRD, Shane Allen went to be with Christ on June 18, 2008, in Quartz Hill. Shane was born on October 28, 1989, at Antelope Valley Hospital. Shane was 18 years old. Shane is survived by his mother Ronda and step- father Dennis McPeek, father Mark Byrd, sisters Sage and Shaleigh, grandparents Gary and Helen Hardy, Ila and James Byrd, great-grandmother Erma Kilby, aunts Tracy Cohn, Mary Brinson, Karen Langley (Rick) and uncles Mike Rice, Pat Rice, Tim Rice (Debbie), several cousins and many other loving family members and friends. Shane was an absolute gift from God and was the best son a mother could ever have. He was always so happy and brought so much joy to his family and friends. Shane is a "real" person and never tried to be
someone he was not. He never allowed anyone to influence his decisions. Shane was blessed to have a grandma and grandpa who always taught him to be a person of honesty, integrity, and a man of God. Shane is known for always setting a goal and accomplishing it. He adored his twin sisters Sage and Shaleigh. He was the best "bubba" a girl could have. He enjoyed playing the guitar for them and they were his biggest fans. Shane was a great golfer and loved to play pool. Shane had a passion for his guitar, his music and enjoyed leading worship at Desert Christian High School, where he graduated in 2007. He loved being a Dairy Boi, and was known for "fire in the hole." Shane was proud of his new job as a Scribe in the ER at AV Hospital and was excited about his future as an EMT and paramedic. Shane had a great love for God, people, and Panda Express. His smile made everyone feel as though they were the most important person in the world. Shanes "House" style, sense of humor and mischievous pranks will always be remembered. Shane will live in our hearts forever. We will be celebrating Shanes life at 5 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2008, at Grace Chapel 44648 15th St West, Lancaster. The visitation will be Thursday 5 to 7 p.m., at Grace Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to Grace Resource Center would honor Shanes memory.
