Carl served as a Staff Sergeant, 65th Transportation Squadron, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in the District Of Columbia prior to the war.

Carl was either a "medical passenger" or assisting with "medical passengers" on C-47A #42-24228, 65th Troop Carrier Squadron, 422rd Troop Carrier Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

C-47A #42-24228 took off on an operational "Medical" mission, with a crew of 4 and 9 passengers and a formation of other C-47's, from Nadzab Air Field, Morobe Province Papua New Guinea. The flight was scheduled to land at Saidor, Madang Providence, Papua New Guinea.

Near Finschhafen C-47A #42-24228 ran into adverse weather. Pilot Hutchinson called the flight leader in the other C-47 and suggested "turning back" to Nadzab. The flight leader responded with "negative" as he felt he saw clear skys ahead. They ended up crashing near Finschhafen with a loss of all on board. Originally they were all noted as "Missing In Action" however the remains of the entire crew were later found.

Carl was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

It is currently unknown if he was awarded any medals.
