CARROLLTON – John Lewis Basnight, 69, of 15311 New Towne Haven Lane, died Monday, Feb. 26, 1996, at Louise Obici Hospital, Suffolk. He was a native of Edenton, N.C., and a retired heavy equipment operator from Local No. 147, Operating Engineers, Norfolk. Mr. Basnight was a member of Benn's United Methodist Church and an honorary member of Carrollton Ruritan Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Gilliam Basnight; two nieces, Robin Basnight of Highland Park, Fla., and Vicky Basnight Garrison of Virginia Beach; one nephew, Charles Basnight of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. in St. Luke's Memorial Park with the Rev. Fred Breeden officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, and at other times at the residence of Mrs. Mamie G. Turner, 15352 New Towne Haven Lane, Carrollton. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, Va. 23431. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.
