It was a large audience that gathered in the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock to attend the funderal of Mr. Baldwin. It included a goodly number of former Bereans, also the members of the Grand Army Post, of which the deceased had been a member. The latter read their ritual service for the dead at the close of services.
The services were in charge of the pastor, Rev. EF Wood, and he was ably assisted by Dr AM Mattison and Dr AB Storms, President of Baldwi-Wallace College. Dr Mattison's eulogy of Mr Baldwin's life was one of his ablest efforts and it covered a close acquaintanceship of many years. Dr Storms spoke of Mr Baldwin as trustee of the college and one of its greatest benefactors. He also read resolutions from the college faculty. There was a profusion of flowers, the casket being hidden by their abundance.
John Baldwin Jr. was born in "the old red house" in Berea and died in New Orleans, aged 81 years, 6 months and 21 days. He was the 4th of 7 children born to John Baldwin, Sr. and Mary Dunn Baldwin, of whom but one, Rosannah Baldwin Walker, is living. He married Lury Ann GOULD in 1863. To this union was born John Paul, Philura Gould BALDWIN and Milton T., of whom but John Paul is living.
He was a member of Berea Lodge, No 882, F&AM for nearly fifty years, also of Berea Post Grand Army of the Republic. He served one term as Mayor of this village many years ago. He was an inventor of mechanical devices that were a financial success.
His circle of friends was large and he will be greatly missed both by his immediate family and friends, but also by this college, who will lose one of its chief friends and among its greatest benefactors.
My lineage: He was married to my gggggrandmother (Mary Isabelle GOULD)'s sister, Lury Ann GOULD.
