Harmon Gilson Brown is the son of Charles Brown and Ann Christian and the youngest of 11 children. Ann (Christian) Brown died in 1844 in Owasco, Cayuga County, NY.

In 1850 he is in Owasco, Cayuga County, NY: Harmon G. Brown is living with his father, Charles and step mother, Polly and brother Thomas and family.

In 1860 he is in Owasco, Cayuga County, NY with his first wife, Harriet (VanBlaricum) and sons, John Charles Brown and George H. Brown. First wife Harriet dies in 1865.

In 1870 Harmon listed as "Herman" is in Steuben County, IN with 2nd wife, Maggie (Margaret Melissa Tanner of Cayuga Co., NY) and children. Maggie died in 1878.

In 1880 he is he in Steuben County, IN with 3rd wife, Carrie M. (Wallin) Brown and children, daughter, Jennie E., sons by Maggie, Orla and Guy and new "unnamed son" Melza Clinton Brown.

He & his family moved to Doland, Spink County, S.D. in 1881 and built a Hotel.

In 1885 S.D. Census he is in Doland, Spink, County, S.D. with Carrie M. wife, Orla A. Brown, son, Calvin A., son, Melza C., son, and a housekeeper, Cora from Sweden.

Harmon Gilson & Carrie M. (Wallin) Brown had 2 more children in Doland, S.D. Guy Harmon Brown on May 30th, 1886 and Carrie May Brown in May 18th, 1893.

He is listed in the S.D. Veterans Census, having served in the 16th NY Heavy Artillary.

He died August 20, 1894, 2 weeks after a tornado blew the roof off his barn & from chronic illness acquired from the Civil War.
