John Franklin Dickinson was the second son of Clark Morgan Dickinson (1800-1863) and Mary Elizabeth Askew (1802-1890), early settlers of Pike (subsequently Spalding) County. Captain Dickinson's name appears in the muster roll of Company B, Fifth Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Griffin Light Guards. He enlisted as a private on May 10, 1861 and was probably involved in the Santa Rosa Island campaign that began in March 1862. Dickinson was discharged on April 03, 1862 at Chattanooga, shortly after the transfer of the Fifth from the Department of Alabama and West Florida. On May 07, 1862, Dickinson enlisted in Gibson's Battery, Georgia Light Artillery, the unit to which his brother Clark was attached. He was hospitalized at LaFayette, Georgia on September 16, 1863 (before Chickamauga) and subsequently enlisted in Company C, Second Regiment, Georgia State Guards. He was mustered out on January 30, 1864. During July 1864, he was elected First Lt. of Company L, Fifth Regiment, Georgia Reserve Infantry and was subsequently elevated to the rank of Captain. Dickinson was surrendered at Charleston, South Carolina during April 1865. In 1867 he married Mary E. Holsey and one daughter, Effie Pauline, was born in 1870. On July 3, 1890, he married Mary Weldon Ballard, former wife of Oswell Terrel Malone and daughter of Thomas Weldon Ballard and Elizabeth Jane Allen. A son, John Frank, was born on May 1, 1891.
